Fort Smith, Arkansas

Another 625 miles and 850 to go!

We had a beautiful drive today. It started out cloudy and with a little rain, lightning and thunder, the remnants of Hurricane Dolly. We had an early start at 7:30am from Santa Rosa, NM and the sky cleared by the time we reached the east side of Amarillo, TX. As you know all Texans brag about how big everything is in Texas and we can vouch for their rest stops. They were enormous with even BBQ grills shaped like the state of Texas. In Amarillo there is a hotel, the Horse Hotel, that offers free 72oz steaks when you board your horse.

Then we entered Oklahoma which was prettier than we expected. We even saw the sign for the Pottowome indian tribe that Fr. Joe sometimes quotes in his sermons. Gas is as low as $3.59 here in Arkansas. We passed a large resevoir called Eufaula Resevior, and next to it was an exit road named "Latawatah Rd".

When we drove through the panhandle of Texas we gave Paul and Teresa Koehler a call and Pauls recovery is progressing as expected. We couldn't visit because Corpus Christi is about 800 miles from Amarillo.

Attached to the left is a photo of Calvin about 100 miles west of Ft. Smith, lookin good!

We plan on doing about 600 miles tomorrow with 250 left for Tuesday.

God Bless to All
